Opt Art

Domino Artwork is an example of "Opt Art", art constructed with the aid of mathematical optimization techniques. Other examples include continuous line drawings produced via the solution of large-scale traveling salesman problems and pointillist works produced via linear programming.

Each of the examples is based on the same 200x220 digital photograph of Marilyn Monroe. In each case, the first step was to divide the photo into 55 rows and 50 columns of cells, each consisting of a 4x4 collection of pixels. One of the pictures is a domino portrait, one is a continuous line drawing (produced by solving an 11,624-city traveling salesman problem), one is a pointillist disk portrait, and one is a knot portrait.

Here's an example of something that might fit in the "unique" category, a 12"x12"x12" sculpture of Marilyn Monroe constructed out of several thousand livecube building block pieces (http://www.livecube.com).

We are always pleased to do custom portraits. If you'd like a TSP Art portrait, a pointillism portrait, or if you have an idea for a unique portrait, please e-mail bob@dominoartwork.com.
